Intergenerational Working Partnership

Debra Bedford

During the half term break we took a group of children to visit our local residential home. This is a valuable part of our intergenerational links with the local community.

The home has a lovely, well stocked arts and crafts room where the children and residents were united to paint, draw, glue, glitter and have a sing song. It was wonderful to see how the two generations interacted so naturally.

There were lots of two-way conversations and the residents helped to support the children as the decorated their artwork. We sang songs and the residents told us stories from their past. One of the ladies had been a deputy manager in a day nursery, she told us how much she admired us for the good work we do. She also commented on how polite and well behaved the children were.

As our visit ended some of the residents told us that it had been lovely to see the children and it had made their day!

Chloe the activity co Ordinator for the home said that the residents are always excited about the children visiting and that many are eager to come and join in the fun. Commenting on how lovely it is to see the children having fun, have conversations with them.

We are planning for the residents to visits us next time in Easter, where we will be doing lots of arts and crafts, singing and dancing. We are hoping for a special visit from the Easter bunny too.
