Parent Champions

What have our volunteers been up to?

Our fantastic Parent Champion volunteers have been super busy for the past few months! Here are just a few things they’ve been doing:

  • Completing a variety of online elearning short courses
  • Attending network meetings
  • Attending community events
  • Having a voice on interview panels
  • Being a part of funding panels
  • Suggesting learning and courses for the community, such as Flat Stan First Aid, Makaton and BSL.
  • Attended peer support training

“The BSL training has been especially wonderful, as my pre-verbal son was signing and I didn’t realise, opening up a whole new world of communication”

What do you get out of being a Parent Champion?

By becoming a Parent Champion volunteer with us, you will:

  • Have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends
  • Be able to give feedback and express your opinions on lots of local issues / offers
  • Be invited to multiple volunteer events and celebrations, throughout the year (including parties, park walks, family days, community events and more!)
  • Get approved expenses paid (including public transport and mileage)
  • Boost your confidence / self esteem / CV
  • Get Calderdale leisure centre access
  • Have access to a range of support groups, including peer support and menopause support

“Being a Parent Champion has given me access to valuable training, which has been useful and allowed me to develop personally and professionally. It also enabled me to become part of the community and to help shape it. Due to being a parent-carer of two disabled children, I’ve always felt isolated, but being a parent champion has made me feel included for the first time in over a decade.”

“Meeting new people, having an input in the local community and having the opportunity to go on BSL workshop, which is amazing!”

“I enjoy being part of a like minded group making a difference to my community”
