Beechwood Big Picnic a Big North Halifax Blast!

Our first ever Beechwood Big Picnic was a proper community event that wouldn’t have been the same without all the groups and services involved on the day.

The event was packed with activities and entertainment for all ages… even our canine friends got involved in the dog show.

Sun or rain such effort and hard work from a fab team and fab volunteers made the day!!

We met up again in August to reflect and evaluate, and to decide whether to aim for a 2nd Beechwood Picnic next year! Let us know what you think – anything that you particularly enjoyed, or what you think could have made the day even better!

ENERGY SAVING TOP TIP #3
Shrink your bills, not your clothes…

Did you know that 90% of a washing machine’s energy expenditure is spent on heating the water, so if you wash your clothes at 30-40 °C you can save a significant amount of money.

It’s hard to predict the exact amount of money you will save by lowering the temperature but according to the Energy Saving Trust washing clothes at 30 degrees uses around 40 per cent less electricity over a year than washing at higher temperatures.

You could also save a bit of money by having a go at making your own washing detergent… Find out how and have a go yourself…

It’s not all about washing though! Instead of using a dryer when it comes to drying your clothes why not try hanging them instead, accomplishing the same thing for free.

ENERGY BOOSTING TOP TIP #3
Sleep Better

Spending your nights tossing and turning can definitely make you feel exhausted the next day. While you sleep, your body is restoring and repairing the day’s damage.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, try;

  1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule which will help regulate your internal body clock.
  2. Eliminate caffeine after 3 p.m. — the effects can last up to 12 hours.
  3. If you are stressed, it may help to write down what’s keeping you up at night.

Our Centres have been busy growing…

Courgettes grown at Innovations Children’s Centre

Throughout August, our Children’s centres have been busy growing a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Preschool children at Innovations Children’s Centre have been growing courgettes, carrots, onions, peas and beans as well as strawberries which have been frozen to make jam to have with scones.

Elsewhere, children at Kevin Pearce Children’s Centre have planted fruits and vegetables and much to their delight they spotted a handful of juicy blueberries that were ready to be picked and tasted.
