Lots of growings on in our Children’s Centres!

The weather is warm…Get Growing!

Jack Marham from Kevin Pearce Children’s Centre, and brother George with their home-grown Strawberries.

We look set to have some glorious weather this weekend so why not make the most of it and get out in the garden to start growing your own vegetables.

Here are just some of the things you can start growing in June… beetroot, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, peas … more here…

Why not get ready for Halloween early and save some money by having a go at growing your own pumpkins.

The seeds can be planted straight into the ground in June. Just prepare the soil by adding lots of well-rotted compost.

ENERGY SAVING TOP TIP #2

Shower vs Bath!

Did you know that baths tend to use a huge amount of hot water compared to a shower which in turn costs more money?

But make it quick because there’s one thing that beats standing under the warm water for ages and that saving money! (especially if you are on a water meter).

By cutting two minutes off the time you spend under the water you can save about £40 off your combined energy and water bills annually. (Imagine what you could do with the extra 12 hours of time this would save you every year!)

ENERGY BOOSTING TOP TIP #2

Have a drink of water.

Dehydration can leave you feeling drained and fatigued. You don’t necessarily have to follow the “eight glasses a day” rule, but you do want to drink enough water to keep your body well hydrated. You can tell you’re well hydrated when you don’t feel thirsty and your urine is light-colored.

Try to get to the fridge or water cooler for a refill every few hours. The walk there will also help you wake up.

At Wellholme Park Children Centre nursery we are very lucky to have such a fantastic outdoor play area.

The children have enjoyed helping James, our caretaker tend to the day to day care of the fruit, vegetables and herbs that we are growing.

Just look at what we have grown so far!

Spring onions, broad beans and strawberries…

We used the spring onion in our home made fish pie with a side of broad beans and had strawberries and ice cream for pudding!

Truly scrumptious and all home grown!
